DIY Father’s Day Keychain: How to Make a Tie Keychain
What You’ll Need:
- Keychain Hardware
- Polyester Ribbon (I used 38mm thick ribbon, 20cm long)
- Lighter
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun or Needle & Thread (thread ideally same color as ribbon)
Step 1:
Fold your ribbon in half and place it behind the keychain ring.
Step 2:
Feed the tails of the ribbon through the loop at the top.
Step 3:
Pull the tails of the ribbon to tighten.
Step 4:
Adjust the ribbon and knot until the tie is the right length and shape.
Step 5:
Using a straight corner (ruler or book edge would do) and pencil, draw on the top ribbon a 90-degree corner from the center point of your tie.
Step 6:
Following the pencil lines, cut away the corners.
Step 7:
Using a lighter, carefully melt the raw edges of the corner. Do not touch the flame to the ribbon. Keeping your flame about 2cm away. This will give you a nicely melted but not burnt edge.
If you’re doing this craft with kids, make sure to do this step for them.
Step 8:
Now to finish the back of the tie, trim the back tail to be 4-5 cm long. Tuck this up into the middle of the knot so the raw edge is not visible.
Step 9:
If you’re using needle and thread, be sure to use a color that matches your tie color. Stitch the back and the front base of the tie together. Try and avoid stitching anywhere visible at the front.
If you’re using hot glue, squirt a very small amount in between the layers to secure them together. Be sure not to use too much or press too hard while hot, or else the glue may show through the other side.
