The Citrus Party Setting
This event was slightly unique, as our venue was the parties’ camping spot. I must say, I’m very grateful that this area wasn’t too off-grid, and it was possible to use luxuries like dining chairs.
Having the surrounding woods gave this event a far darker backdrop than what is usually thought of for the summery fruits. Yet with the bright tablecloth and fruit decorations, the table display did pop!
Using Fruit to Frame the Space
I always try to use height when decorating an event. Whether that means tall centerpieces, an overhead garland or a tall backdrop. I find that doing something like this really frames the party and gives a “larger than life” feel.
Using the tree trunk structure that was already in place, I added a muslin curtain and citrus bunting.
Citrus bunting is so simple to make. I used an embroidery needle with white cotton twine to thread through the thin slices of oranges, lemons and grapefruit. To keep the pieces spaced evenly I would add a knot before threading on a slice and then repeat the step again roughly 15cm up the string.
Because I wanted the fresh summery look, I sliced the fruit fresh rather than using dried slices. This works perfectly fine if you’re creating the garland for single use.
Tablecloths and Place Settings
I love yellow! The right tone of yellow just fills me with summery happiness… Which is exactly how I wanted my guests to feel at this table!
I found this beautiful yellow tablecloth at a second-hand store. As it was slightly too short for my long table, I chose to drape it over white fabric, which only showed slightly at the ends of the table.
To complement the white curtains and base tablecloth, I used white cotton placemats. If you’d like to know how to make these placemats yourself, check out my post: Elegant & Easy DIY Placemats Perfect For Any Occasion
For the plates, I used bright vintage rimmed dinner plates. This is an excellent example of how you can use mismatched plates while still keeping your table cohesive. The way I did this was by using matching white salad plates on top. The final elegant touch was using gold cutlery and glass goblets.
The Fruit Table Display
And finally, we come to creating the fruit centerpiece. I went for a combination of oranges, lemons, peaches and grapefruit for this display. Some other gorgeous additions could be limes or mandarins.
The grapefruit and peaches added a beautiful warm pink, while the orange and lemon were vibrant focal colors. To decorate the table, we used a mix of whole and halved fruits.
These were mixed through the center of the table, all the way from the beginning placemat to the end.
And lastly, using small glass milk bottles as vases, I added 5 poses of daisies. Florals are not at all necessary in this setting but can help to add some different dimension.
Conclusion
I so hope you enjoyed these easy fruit decoration ideas and you’re now equipped with some great inspiration. My guests loved this event and I’m sure yours would too.
This theme made me appreciate how sometimes the raw creations God has given us are really the most beautiful decorations of all.
